Can Alcohol Cause a Stroke

First, the results of the study are contingent upon the accuracy of alcohol history reporting, and family members may be relied upon for patients who were not able to provide detailed history. Thus this study may suffer from reporting and recall biases. Second, the stratification of alcohol consumption was based on the number of drinks, and data regarding the exact amount of alcohol consumed were not available.

An ischemic stroke is caused by a blocked artery in the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by leaking or bursting of a blood vessel in the brain. Some people may have only a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

  1. Being overweight, physically inactive, drinking alcohol heavily, recreational drug use.
  2. This is more apparent when looking at the heavy drinking category.
  3. So the blood spills into the brain tissue or surrounding the brain.
  4. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts and causes bleeding in the brain.

In addition, further understanding of the mechanism by which alcohol confers its protective effects is needed. This is the largest study to date in the literature investigating alcohol consumption and ICH risk. Significant differences in alcohol consumption were detected between the case and control groups. Cases were alcohol withdrawal symptoms timeline and detox treatment more likely to report no or heavy alcohol consumption, while the controls were more likely to report rare, moderate, and intermediate alcohol consumption. Higher prevalence of binge drinking was detected in the case group, and patients in the case group also reported a higher frequency of binge drinking (table 1).

Levels of alcohol consumption were evaluated using patients’ self-reporting. Participants answered a series of questions using a questionnaire or an interview. A TIA occurs when a blood clot or fatty deposit reduces or blocks blood flow to part of the nervous system. If you or someone you’re with may be having a stroke, pay attention to the time the symptoms began. Some treatments are most effective when given soon after a stroke begins. Finally, as this is an observational study, it cannot show causality between using alcohol and the risk of developing different kinds of stroke.

Once your doctors can determine if you’re having an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, they’ll be able to figure out the best treatment. If you’re suffering an ischemic stroke, it’s important to restore blood flow to your brain as quickly as possible, providing the oxygen and other nutrients your brain cells need to survive. To do this, doctors may use an intravenous clot buster medicine, dissolving the clot that is obstructing the blood flow or they may perform an emergency endovascular procedure. This involves advancing a tiny plastic tube called a catheter up into the brain arteries, allowing the blockage in the artery to be removed directly. In this video, we’ll cover the basics of a stroke. What is it, who it happens to, the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

However, some of the studies included in the meta-analysis were small central nervous system cns depression in sample size, which means that the positive effects of light to moderate alcohol use may have been overestimated. Dr. Larsson points out that the large sample size included in the analysis allowed for accurate associations between a wide range of alcohol consumption patterns and patient subgroups.

However, consuming alcohol in high amounts remains highly dangerous.
